Does insurance pay for therapy, and how does that work?

Yes, most insurances do pay for therapy. To determine if you have mental health coverage through your insurance carrier, the first thing you should do is call them. Check your coverage carefully and make sure you understand their answers (please see the financial policy in the intake packet.) Some helpful questions you can ask them:

  • What are my outpatient (in-office) mental health benefits?
  • What is my deductible?
  • Do I have to meet my deductible before insurance starts to pay?
  • Do I have a co-payment or co-insurance that I will have to pay per session?
  • Do I need pre-authorization for therapy sessions?
  • How many therapy sessions does my plan cover per year?
